Srinagar, Sep 22: Noisy scenes were witnessed in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday after National Conference MLA Majid Larmi raised the issue of holidays associated with the birth and death anniversaries of former J&K Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah.
Larmi told Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather that September 23 was a holiday and demanded that holidays on the birth and death anniversaries of Sheikh Abdullah also be restored.
The NC legislator further said that the government should instead consider cancelling the holiday associated with Maharaja Hari Singh.
His remarks drew strong reactions from BJP members, leading to noisy scenes in the House.
The BJP legislators objected to Larmi’s remarks, resulting in heated exchanges as the Speaker sought to maintain order and continue the proceedings.
“Maintain discipline in the House,” the Speaker told members of both the ruling party and the Opposition.
Meanwhile, BJP member R S Pathania said the ruling party member was raising a controversial issue in the House.
PDP legislator Waheed Parra, however, said Larmi had raised a legitimate issue, adding that the government should also restore the July 13 holiday.
“Government should also restore July 13 holiday as well,” Parra said.
Amid the noisy scenes, NC MLA Mubarak Gul recalled the reforms carried out during Sheikh Abdullah’s tenure. (With inputs from Syed Rizwan Geelani)
