Kupwara, Sep 26: Machil Mela 2026, organised with a focus on promoting border tourism, concluded in the picturesque Machil Valley of Kupwara with enthusiastic participation from thousands of people.
The day-long event witnessed an estimated participation of 4,500 to 5,000 people from Machil and adjoining areas, showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage, sporting talent, traditional skills and tourism potential.
The event began with the Machil Trail Challenge, in which around 300 participants covered 10-km and 21-km routes through the challenging terrain of the valley, providing a platform for adventure tourism in the remote border region.
Various stalls displaying local products, agriculture, handicrafts, traditional skills and community initiatives were also set up during the Mela, giving visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural heritage and local potential of Machil Valley.
The Indian Army also felicitated participants and winners of sporting events organised during the year, including the Pony Race, Athletics, Men’s Cricket Premier League, Women’s Cricket Premier League and Volleyball Championship. The winners and participants were presented cash prizes, medals and trophies in recognition of their achievements.
ASHA workers, social workers, senior citizens and other community members who have contributed towards the welfare and development of the region were also felicitated during the event.
Adding to the celebrations, Jazba Band enthralled the audience with musical performances and energetic dance presentations, drawing appreciation from residents and guests.
School students remained another major attraction of the cultural festival. Students and teachers from schools in Mishri Baihk, Dabpal, Machil and Army Goodwill School T-Sunt presented colourful cultural and musical performances, showcasing the creativity and talent of local children.
Addressing the gathering, the General Officer Commanding, 28 Infantry Division, highlighted the Indian Army’s continued efforts towards development, youth engagement, women’s empowerment and promotion of border tourism in Machil Valley.
He described Machil as a region known for its natural beauty, rich culture, traditions, local talent and the warmth of its people, while organisedg the importance of collective efforts to promote different facets of the region and strengthen its tourism potential.
The Mela, organised with a special focus on positioning Machil Valley as a border tourism destination, also provided local youth, women and communities an opportunity to showcase their talent, culture and traditional heritage.
The successful conclusion of Machil Mela 2026 reflected the strong spirit of community participation and growing enthusiasm among the people towards sports, culture, tourism, education and development.
The event concluded with a renewed emphasis on collective efforts involving the local community, administration, teachers, students, youth, women and the Indian Army to create new opportunities and further strengthen the development and tourism potential of Machil Valley.
