Jammu, Oct 1: Warning that it would further intensify its movement, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Thursday reiterated its demand for restoration of full statehood with constitutional guarantees for the protection of land, jobs and natural resources without further delay.
JKPCC working president Raman Bhalla, former minister Mula Ram, chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma and party’s chief whip in J&K Legislative Assembly Nizamuddin Bhat, while addressing a joint press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, Jammu maintained that BJP was fully exposed for the betrayal to honour its repeated commitments with regard to statehood, made before the Parliament, apex court and the public.
“The central government and the BJP continuously betrayed the people of J&K by not granting the statehood – promised by the Prime Minister and Home Minister time and again during the past seven years – on the floor of Parliament, before the apex court and in the public rallies to seek massive mandate in the assembly elections,” they alleged.
Declaring that the party would intensify the statehood movement “Hamari Riyasat , Hamara Haq” along with the nationwide campaign of I.N.D.I. bloc against “Vote Chori” announced on September 30, JKPCC leaders said that BJP was fully exposed during the passage of the resolution on statehood in the UT assembly.
“Passage is an indication of the resentment over the Centre’s failure to honour its commitment and respect the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the rightful demand for statehood,” they asserted.
Asserting that statehood was the right of the people of J&K, chief whip of Congress in Legislative Assembly, Nizamuddin Bhat said that people were not demanding anything new but the fulfilment of the public commitment by the Centre itself.
“As BJP has no answer, it is trying to divert the attention of people from the fundamental demand. From day one, Congress stand is clear that we want full statehood with constitutional guarantees for land and jobs, as were available to the people of J&K right from the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh and also availed by the people in about a dozen other states in the country under the Constitution of India,” he asserted.
Congress leaders said that I.N.D.I. bloc in its significant meeting on September 30, 2026 decided to launch a nationwide campaign to “Save democracy” from Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti i.e., October 2, followed by the opposition MPs’ march to the office of Election Commission of India on October 6 besides holding mega rallies across the country as the democracy was under threat.
“The BJP has hijacked the electoral system through CEC Gyanesh Kumar, who should be sacked and prosecuted. Alongside this campaign, the J&K Congress would also intensify its ongoing statehood movement. The Congress would not allow BJP to escape accountability vis-à-vis its public commitments,” they stated.
