Kupwara, Oct 4: The residents and traders of Magam Market in Handwara have expressed discontent over the lack of public washrooms in the market, causing significant inconvenience to visitors and traders.

Locals said Magam Market, being centrally located, witnesses a heavy footfall of thousands of people, including women, children and elderly citizens, every day who visit the market for shopping and other commercial activities.

“The absence of a public washroom is causing considerable inconvenience to people who visit the market every day. Women and elderly people are particularly affected,” Dr Jamsheed, a local, told Greater Kashmir.

He said the public washroom was a long-pending demand that deserves immediate attention.

“A public washroom would provide much-needed relief to visitors as well as traders. A marketplace is not just about shops and business. It must also have basic facilities to ensure the comfort and dignity of the people who visit it,” he added.

The residents said they have brought this genuine concern to the notice of the concerned authorities numerous times, but nothing has been done so far in this regard.

They urged the concerned authorities to take cognizance of the issue and ensure the construction of a public washroom at a suitable location in Magam Market.

They sought the immediate intervention of Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Shrikant Balasaheb in the matter.
