Baramulla, Oct 6: The Baramulla district administration on Tuesday demolished a cowshed being used as a dairy farm on land belonging to the Flood Control Department, officials said.
The demolition was carried out amid tight security and in the presence of a magistrate as part of the administration’s ongoing drive to retrieve government land allegedly under unauthorised occupation.
According to officials, the dairy unit, located near Stadium Colony in Baramulla, was being operated by the wife of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and her relatives.
An official said a notice had been served to the occupants, directing them to vacate the government land before the demolition action was initiated.
“Since the occupants did not respond to the notice and failed to vacate the land, the administration proceeded with the demolition as per the prescribed procedure,” the official said.
The official said the land falls under the jurisdiction of the Flood Control Department and had allegedly been occupied without authorisation.
The demolition was conducted in the presence of officials from the district administration and concerned departments.
Security personnel were deployed in strength in and around the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident during the exercise.
Officials said the operation was completed peacefully and without any incident.
The action is part of the Government’s broader exercise to identify and retrieve government land occupied illegally by individuals or private entities.
Meanwhile, the encroachers were identified as Sajad Ahmad Buhroo, Tariq Ahmad Buhroo, Tabasum Guroo, Manzoor Ahmad Buhroo and others.
In a statement, the authorities said that several kanals of prime State land allegedly under illegal occupation had been retrieved in Baramulla district as part of an ongoing anti-encroachment drive by the administration.
The statement said the land, located in a prime area and estimated to be worth crores of rupees, was restored to government control after removing the unauthorised occupation.
