Srinagar, Oct 9: India Post has inaugurated its first N-Gen-themed post office in Kashmir at the University of Kashmir campus, making it the second such facility in the Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle, after AIIMS Vijaypur.
Launched as part of the Department of Posts’ initiative to modernise campus post offices, the N-Gen facility aims to transform conventional postal outlets into youth-centric, technology-enabled service hubs.
The University of Kashmir Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nilofer Khan, and Chief Postmaster General, Jammu and Kashmir Circle, D. S. V. R. Murthy, inaugurated the post office in the presence of Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Srinagar Postal Division, Adam Mohi-ud-Din. Senior postal officials, faculty members, university staff and students attended the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Nilofer Khan described the initiative as a transformative step towards aligning traditional postal services with the aspirations of young people. She said it reflected the Department of Posts’ commitment to developing service centres that cater to the needs and preferences of younger citizens.
Murthy highlighted the vision of Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, saying India Post must evolve into a modern logistics and financial services provider while retaining its inclusive approach.
He said the N-Gen initiative sought to bridge the gap between the reliability of traditional postal services and the speed of digital technology. The facility offers a modern ambience, digital payment options, simplified service delivery and improved access to postal, banking, insurance and e-commerce services under one roof.
The Chief Postmaster General said the post office would also promote awareness of postal savings schemes, digital banking through India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) and other value-added services among students and the university community.
He said the initiative marked an important step towards strengthening campus-based public services and reflected the shared commitment of the Department of Posts and the University of Kashmir to innovation, collaboration, inclusivity and customer-centric service delivery.
The interior of the N-Gen post office has been redesigned to create a welcoming, youth-friendly environment. The premises feature attractive wallpapers, comfortable sofas, a smart television, traditional papier-mâché décor and crewel curtains, blending modern amenities with Kashmiri craftsmanship.
Students from the University of Kashmir participated in the renovation process and were awarded certificates and honorariums in recognition of their contributions. The wall art was created by students of the university’s School of Fine Arts, adding a distinctive artistic touch to the facility.
To improve convenience, particularly for students, the post office has introduced a coffee machine, free Wi-Fi, board games and Aadhaar updation services. A five-foot-tall decorative pen has also been installed beside the letter box, serving as an attraction and selfie point for students.
