Srinagar, Oct 18: Kawalpreet Singh made the most of his opportunity with a fighting 96 as Jammu and Kashmir were bowled out for 260 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite clash against Vidarbha at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar on Sunday.
Given a place in the playing XI, Kawalpreet delivered a composed innings of 96 off 176 balls, striking 15 boundaries, and emerged as the standout performer for J&K. However, he fell agonisingly short of what would have been a memorable century, being run out at 96.
J&K, who were asked to bat first after Vidarbha won the toss, struggled to build substantial partnerships apart from Kawalpreet’s contribution. Captain Paras Dogra was the next-best scorer with 36 off 67 balls, while wicketkeeper-batter Rydham Sharma contributed 31 off 45 deliveries.
Yawer Hassan, brought into the side in place of Shubham Khajuria, made 21 but failed to convert his start into a substantial innings. Qamran Iqbal departed for nine, while Abdul Samad’s struggles with the bat continued as he managed just one run.
Lone Nasir scored 21, while Abid Mushtaq added 25. J&K innings folded at 260 in 82.5 overs.
For Vidarbha, Nachiket Bhute led the bowling effort with three wickets, while Rajneesh Gurbani and Yash Thakur claimed two wickets each.
At stumps, J&K held a first-innings total of 260, leaving Vidarbha to begin their reply on the second day.
