New Delhi, Mar 9: An Indian Armed Forces contingent has arrived in Seychelles to participate in the 11th edition of the joint military exercise “Lamitiye-2026” with the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF). The exercise will be held at the Seychelles Defence Academy from March 9 to March 20.
“Lamitiye”, which means “Friendship” in the Creole language, is a biennial training exercise conducted in Seychelles since 2001 and is aimed at strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries.
This year’s edition marks a significant milestone as it will see participation from all three services of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian contingent includes troops from the Assam Regiment along with elements from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The Indian Navy has deployed the frontline frigate INS Trikand, while the Indian Air Force is participating with a C-130 transport aircraft.
The joint exercise will focus on enhancing operational coordination in sub-conventional operations in semi-urban environments and improving cooperation and interoperability between the two forces during peacekeeping missions.
During the 12-day exercise, troops from both sides will train together to plan and execute a series of tactical drills aimed at neutralising potential threats in semi-urban settings while also showcasing the use of new-generation equipment and technology.
The training programme will include field exercises, combat discussions, case studies, lectures and demonstrations. The exercise will culminate in a two-day validation exercise to test the operational preparedness of the participating troops.
Defence officials said the exercise will help strengthen bilateral military ties, while also enabling the two sides to exchange operational experiences, best practices and professional expertise. It is also expected to deepen mutual understanding and enhance coordination between the armed forces of India and Seychelles.
