Kargil, Mar 20: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is set to arrive in Leh on March 22 following his release after nearly six months of detention under the National Security Act, with the Apex Body Leh announcing a public reception in his honour even as he had expressed a desire for a low-key return.
Sources told Greater Kashmir that his Supporters and residents are eager for his return to Leh, slated for March 22. Wangchuk was released around March 14-15, 2026, after a six month detention under NSA. Although Sonam Wangchuk didn’t want any welcome celebration on his arrival back home, sources said.
Meanwhile, the Apex Body Leh (ABL) has announced that it will organise a reception for Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday at the NDS Ground in Leh. In a public appeal, the organisers have invited all those willing to attend to gather at the venue by 10:30 am. They have also requested people to avoid going to the airport, as Wangchuk’s flight is expected to arrive early. Instead, the public has been advised to assemble directly at the NDS Ground to ensure smooth coordination of the reception.
Co-chairman LAB, Tsering Dorjey said that a grand public reception for Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk is scheduled for Sunday, 22 March 2026, at the NDS Ground in Leh.
This event marks his return to Ladakh following his release from Jodhpur jail on 14 March, where he had been detained for nearly six months under the National Security Act (NSA). While his release is seen as a “big victory” by local leaders, the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance maintain that the core demands—statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule—remain unresolved. The Leh Apex Body (LAB) described the decision of his release as a “big victory” for the people of Ladakh, saying it vindicated their stand on his innocence and removed the “anti-national” blot on the region.
Leaders from Ladakh welcomed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s release from Jodhpur jail and demanded the release of remaining detainees. Wangchuk was released from prison after the Union government revoked his detention with immediate effect.
