New Delhi, Mar 11: The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote later today on competing draft resolutions addressing the war involving Iran and its impact on the wider region.
One resolution, backed by several Gulf countries, condemns attacks by Iran against regional states and Jordan. A rival draft introduced by Russia, a close ally of Iran on the council, calls for an end to attacks on civilians and urges all sides to halt fighting and return to negotiations, without naming Iran, Israel, or the United States.
The council last discussed the crisis during an emergency meeting shortly after the conflict erupted. At that meeting, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, said Israeli-US strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks in the region violated the UN Charter.
Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani criticised the Gulf-backed draft, accusing its sponsors of attempting to portray Iran as the aggressor through what he called a “biased and politically motivated” text. The resolution has more than 90 sponsors, including the United Kingdom, and calls for an immediate halt to Iranian attacks and threats against six Gulf states and Jordan, including those carried out through proxies. It also condemns any attempt by Tehran to disrupt international navigation in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
