Anantnag, Jun 17: Two people died on Wednesday after a small car skidded off a mountainous road and fell into a deep gorge near the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, officials said.
Police said the accident occurred around 12:30 pm on the Aru Road when a car (JK03-6737) reportedly lost control and went off the road before plunging into a gorge.
Both occupants died on the spot due to the impact of the crash, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Imran Ahmad Ganai, 30, of Dailgam in Anantnag district, and a woman whose identity has not yet been ascertained.
Soon after the accident, Police and local volunteers launched a rescue operation in the difficult mountainous terrain.
After several hours, the bodies were retrieved from the gorge and shifted to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Pahalgam for medico-legal formalities.
Police initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Officials have not ruled out factors like road conditions, skidding, or mechanical failure.
The Aru road, which connects Pahalgam to higher-altitude tourist areas, is known for sharp bends and narrow stretches, making driving hazardous, particularly for small vehicles.
Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution in the region.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condoled the loss of lives in a the accident.
In his condolence message, the LG said: “Pained by the loss of precious lives in the tragic road accident in Pahalgam. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members in this hour of grief. I have directed the District Administration to provide all necessary assistance to those affected.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the incident, conveying condolences to the bereaved families and directing officials to ensure proper assistance and medical support where needed.
In a statement shared by the Chief Minister’s Office on X, CM Omar conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident and expressed solidarity with them during their time of grief.
He instructed officials to extend all necessary support and assistance to the affected families.
