An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 jolted Ladakh’s Leh early Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake occurred at 6:05:15 am at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, the NCS said. The epicentre was located at 36.881°N latitude and 74.402°E longitude, with the agency identifying the location as Leh, Ladakh.
The tremor was felt in the region, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage following the earthquake.
The shallow depth of the earthquake means seismic waves had a relatively shorter distance to travel to the surface. Such earthquakes can result in stronger ground shaking compared with deeper earthquakes.
The NCS shared the earthquake details through its official updates and advised people to use the BhooKamp app for further information.
Ladakh is located in a seismically active region of the Himalayas and has experienced earthquakes of varying magnitudes in the past.
