Kupwara, Oct 18: Six years after its establishment, Government Degree College (GDC) Langate continues to function from a few rooms of a government girls’ higher secondary school, with its permanent campus still held up by uncertainty over the site.
Established in 2020, the college is yet to have a fully developed campus of its own, raising concerns among students and locals over the lack of basic infrastructure and the institution’s future.
Locals said a degree college should have adequate classrooms, laboratories, a library, a playground and other facilities essential for students’ academic and overall development.
“Six years have passed since the college was established, but the issue of a permanent campus continues to concern students and locals. The authorities should clarify the status of the land and take concrete steps towards developing the institution,” Mohammad Ishaq, a local resident, told Greater Kashmir.
He said the lack of adequate infrastructure was affecting students’ academic experience.
“Our children deserve a proper educational environment with all essential facilities. A permanent campus with adequate infrastructure should have been a priority, but even the present dispensation has failed to do something concrete in this regard,” he said.
Dar Umer, a former student from the college’s 2021 batch, said he had completed his degree several years ago, but the institution was still without a permanent campus.
“This is not about politics. It is about the future of our students and the educational development of the whole area,” he said.
Locals have urged the authorities to resolve the issue on priority, saying students should not continue to face infrastructure constraints years after the college’s establishment.
The case concerning the college’s permanent site is pending in court.
A commission is expected to be constituted to determine the site in the near future.
Meanwhile, MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed expressed hope that the court would resolve the matter at the earliest, paving the way for construction of the college’s permanent campus.
The prolonged delay in finalising the site has left GDC Langate without a campus of its own six years after its establishment.
