Tawi, Chenab in spate as fresh rain spell lashes Jammu, Udhampur, other districts

Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), in a joint operation, also evacuated two persons stranded in swollen Tawiriver near Phallain Mandal area.

In Jammu district, due to sudden surge in Tawiriver amid heavy rainfall, evacuation advisories were issued by the district administration in coordination with the Police in Gujjar Nagar.

The Police officials could be seen making public announcements in and around all vulnerable areas including Gujjar Nagar asking the people to vacate their houses and shift to safer places along with the livestock and essential items.

“As the water level increased in Udhampur to an alarming level, sudden surge in Tawi water level in Jammu was anticipated any moment. We are asking the people not to wait till the water level rises. We are advising people to move with essentials to safer places,” Police said.

The administration had already issued high alert and safety advisories asking the people not to venture near water bodies, most of which are swollen in the wake of intermittent heavy rains.

Situation, however, eased in the evening after the rains stopped. “However, it is advisable not to lower the guard and stay alert,” Police cautioned people.

Similar scenario was there in the areas around Chenab river, which, too, is flowing in full spate.

The authorities, already on high-alert mode after the river crossed danger mark following incessant rainfall, are keenly monitoring the water level with heightened surveillance in vulnerable areas. They have directed all the concerned departments to be in ready-mode for any emergency. Disaster response teams are in standby mode.

According to Commandant SDRF Jammu, Mohd Aslam, in view of the rising water level in the river Chenab at Akhnoor, an SDRF team from battalion headquarters, Jammu was proactively deployed to Paragwal as a precautionary measure under the supervision of DySPRohitJamwal, SDRF Jammu.

“The deployment was aimed at enhancing public safety, conducting awareness activities, monitoring the situation and maintaining operational readiness to respond swiftly to any emergency arising from the increasing water level,” the Commandant SDRF Jammu mentioned, emphasising effective inter-departmental coordination, proactive preparedness and timely response in ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential public services and safeguarding lives and property during natural disasters.

Separately, in a swift and well-coordinated rescue operation, Jammu Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued two persons, stranded in the river Tawi near Prambli, Phallian Mandal, following a sudden rise in the water level.

The rescued persons have been identified as Farman Ali, 25, son of Bashir Ahmed, resident of Allora and Farooq Ahmed, 28, son of Ali Hussain, resident of Sohanjana.

“Both had gone in the morning along with their cattle for grazing near the river when the water level suddenly increased, leaving them trapped in the middle of the river. On receiving the information, Police Post Phallian Mandal immediately alerted the SDRF through PCR Jammu. Acting promptly, SDPO City South, in-charge Police Post Phallian Mandal, police personnel, and the SDRF team rushed to the spot and launched a coordinated rescue operation,” the Commandant stated.

After sustained and meticulous efforts, both individuals were rescued safely without any injuries and were subsequently handed over to their family members.

In a separate operation, an SDRF team from Battalion Headquarters, Jammu removed a large tree that had fallen near Manda on the National Highway due to adverse weather and restored the road for the safe and smooth movement of vehicular traffic.
