Ganderbal, Oct 01: Tensions ran high at the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Nunner campus in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal on Thursday as students from the Department of Chemistry staged a protest demonstration against the Head of the Department (HoD), alleging harassment of a female student.

The demonstration, which began inside the campus saw students boycotting their scheduled classes and laboratory sessions. Chanting slogans, the protesting students demanded the immediate removal or stepping down of the HoD.

According to the protesting students, the grievances had been brewing for several months. They alleged that the HoD frequently resorted to verbal abuse in the class with the students and now harassment to a female student. As news of the protest spread across the campus, senior officials from the university administration rushed to the spot to pacify the agitating students.

Speaking to the media, a senior university official confirmed that after a formal complaint by the students, an internal inquiry committee will be set up to investigate the charges thoroughly. “The university takes all complaints regarding student welfare, academic integrity, and harassment with utmost seriousness,” the official stated.

He said that students can approach the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), adding that the Vice Chancellor has already directed that HoD could be attached if found at fault, while a formal inquiry committee will determine the matter after a formal complaint is received and if the allegations found true, the HoD will face the action under law.
