Srinagar, Oct 1: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat on Thursday said September had been a month of operational achievements for the force in counter-terrorism, asserting that designs from across the border were being defeated even as police continued to maintain law and order and pursue crime prevention and detection.
Addressing the flag-in ceremony of the “Run for Unity” marathon organised by J&K Police at Lake View Environmental Park, Police Golf Course, Dal Lake, the DGP congratulated the participants and said the steady rise in turnout was a positive signal.
“The increase in participation in this marathon every year is a sign that our children and youth are working for a peaceful and prosperous future,” he said. Growing involvement of children and youth, he added, was a message of their commitment to peace and a better future.
“The youth of Kashmir, the residents of the whole of J&K, are investing in peace — peace over violence, progress over destruction, and most importantly, for light. J&K has risen from darkness to light,” Prabhat said. He said the energy of the younger generation was being channelled into constructive activity, and that police contact with youth was growing closer by the day.
On counter-terror operations, the DGP said the force was working to neutralise the plans of what he called “impure neighbours.” “J&K Police, in an attempt to neutralise the plans of the impure neighbours, the counter-terrorist operations that we carry out… the month of September has been a month of joy for us, and a month of many operational achievements,” he said. He said the region was moving towards peace and progress despite attempts from across the border to disrupt it.
He said J&K Police, including the Armed Police, regularly organises sports tournaments and other activities, and is also using the Civic Action Programme, to give young people platforms for constructive engagement.
On the anti-drug campaign, Prabhat said 3,257 cases had been registered so far, with more than 2,500 disposed of and around 4,000 people arrested. He said 170 convictions had been secured. He said 288 properties worth more than Rs 138 crore had been attached, while cash exceeding Rs 80 lakh had been seized. J&K Police, he added, stood “at the top” in the country in preventive detention under the PIT-NDPS Act, with 144 people booked.
Referring to the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, the DGP said the force remained at the forefront of security arrangements, with 19 Mountain Rescue Teams of the J&K Armed Police deployed during this year’s pilgrimage.
He also praised the response to the recent Gulmarg gondola disruption, in which stranded tourists were evacuated. He commended the J&K Police Mountain Rescue Teams and SDRF personnel for the operation, and congratulated the ADGP Armed Police and all personnel involved in the rescue and other duties.
Prabhat also noted the achievements of Armed Police personnel in mountaineering and sports, including successful summit attempts on Kang Yatse in Ladakh and Kolahoi in Anantnag, and a medal at the Asian Championship in Vietnam.
He said the police would continue to provide platforms for youth through sports and other initiatives while contributing towards a peaceful, progressive and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir.
