Srinagar, Oct 17: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehboob Beg has criticised the Jammu and Kashmir Government over its handling of the alleged misconduct by senior IAS officer Kumar Rajeev Ranjan towards JKAS officer Beenish Wani, saying the government must stop “hiding behind technicalities”.
In a statement, Beg said the dignity and respect of government officers must be protected, particularly when they are on the right side of an issue.
“The government must stop hiding behind technicalities, we have seen enough of that. The respect and dignity of our officers must be protected fiercely, especially when they are in the right,” Beg said.
He alleged that the government’s continued capitulation and attempts to make excuses were compromising the dignity and honour of officials.
The remarks come amid a controversy over a viral video purportedly showing Ranjan, Administrative Secretary, Labour and Employment Department, allegedly shouting at and verbally abusing Wani during an official review meeting.
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered an inquiry into the incident and appointed Mandeep Kaur, IAS, as the Inquiry Officer, with directions to submit a report within 15 days.
The National Commission for Women has also taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and sought verification of the video, an impartial inquiry and an Action Taken Report from the Chief Secretary within seven days.
