Srinagar, Aug 1: A seven-year-old boy died after he was struck by a landslide in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday, officials said.
The child was identified as Rehan Ahmad Dar.
Dar was hit by the landslide that occurred near his school in the Mawer area of Handwara in the north Kashmir district. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, the officials said.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo condoled the loss of life.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of young Rehan Ahmad Dar, a Nursery student of Frontline Model School, Mawer, who lost his life in a landslide today. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this unimaginable time of grief,” she said in a post on X.
The minister also directed the concerned authorities to extend all possible assistance to the family and to examine measures for ensuring the safety of students in vulnerable areas.
The Private Schools Association (PSA) expressed grief over the incident.
This incident is an irreparable tragedy that has plunged the entire educational fraternity of Jammu and Kashmir into deep shock and mourning, the PSA said in a statement.
“The untimely loss of an innocent child is heartbreaking and has left the entire school community grief-stricken,” it said.
