Legislative Assembly Speaker and Chrar-i-Sharief MLA Ab Rahim Rather on Tuesday announced the construction of a modern auditorium at Boys Higher Secondary School, Nagam, in Budgam district at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh.

Speaking at a literary function organised at the school, Rather said strengthening educational infrastructure and providing modern teaching and learning facilities were among the government’s priorities. He said science laboratories and smart classrooms were also being promoted.

Paying tribute to noted local poet Abdul Ahad Gulshan on his death anniversary, Rather stressed the importance of quality education and preserving the mother tongue.

Addressing students, he urged them to safeguard their language and literature, saying poets and writers were repositories of knowledge, wisdom and experience.

The programme was organised jointly by the Kashmir Concern Foundation and the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. Chairman of the foundation Advocate Abdul Rashid Hanjura, school Principal Syed Muzaffar Hussain Rizvi and several writers, poets and literary personalities attended the event.

Rather also unveiled one of Gulshan’s literary works. Poet Syed Riyaz Krala Wari was presented the Muqbool Shah Krala Wari Award for his literary contributions and efforts to promote social awareness.

Papers highlighting Gulshan’s life, literary contributions and works were presented during the programme.

In his keynote address, Hanjura urged students and the public to promote and preserve their literature, culture, history and language.

The programme concluded with a mushaira, in which several poets recited their works.
