Baramulla, Aug 30: Clogged and poorly maintained drains, often choked with plastic bottles and other waste, have emerged as a major cause of waterlogging on several roads and lanes in Baramulla town, particularly during the rainy season.
Locals said the problem has been aggravated by what they described as irregular cleaning of street drains by sanitation workers.
According to them, drains, both major and minor, were cleaned more frequently in the past, on a daily basis, helping maintain the flow of rainwater and prevent frequent blockages.
They alleged that the situation has changed over the years, with many drains now remaining unattended for months.
“Earlier, sanitation workers would clean the drains regularly, and as a result, they largely remained unclogged throughout the year. Now, in many areas, the drains are cleaned only once in several months,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local resident.
Residents also alleged that waste and dirt collected during road cleaning is sometimes pushed into nearby drains instead of being properly disposed of.
They said such practices further worsen the situation and defeat the purpose of routine sanitation.
The problem was visible recently near the Women’s College Baramulla, where a major drain that had been opened for cleaning was found severely clogged.
With the passage blocked, water was flowing over the surface of the drain and spilling onto the adjoining road, causing waterlogging and inconvenience to pedestrians and commuters.
A large quantity of plastic bottles and other waste was found lodged inside the drain, pointing to the extent of garbage accumulation and its role in obstructing the free flow of water.
Locals said the issue is not limited to one particular drain and that the drainage system across the town faces similar problems.
They have urged the Municipal Council and concerned authorities to ensure regular desilting and cleaning of drains, prevent dumping of waste into drainage channels and strengthen sanitation monitoring, particularly ahead of and during the rainy season.
