Srinagar, Aug 4: Intense rainfall triggered flash floods in parts of south Kashmir on Tuesday, inundating residential areas while the impact of a cloudburst a day earlier continued to disrupt road connectivity and drinking water supply in neighbouringAnantnag, officials and residents said.
Residents of K B Pora village in Kulgam said a spell of heavy, short-duration rain sent torrents of water through streets, with floodwater entering several houses and causing panic.
“The rain was so intense that water entered homes within minutes. People were frightened by the sudden rise in water levels,” a resident said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
In neighbouringAnantnag district, the Khanabal-Pahalgam road remained disrupted after the Batkoot-Langnaibridge was damaged in flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in the upper reaches of Pahalgam on Monday.
Officials said the cloudburst unleashed a sudden surge of water carrying boulders, mud and debris, damaging the bridge and briefly halting traffic.
Vehicular movement was later restored through temporary arrangements, though repair work was continuing.
The cloudburst also disrupted drinking water supply to Anantnag town and several adjoining areas after muddy floodwaters made the raw water in the Lidder stream unsuitable for treatment.
The Jal Shakti Department said multiple cloudbursts in the upper reaches of Pahalgam had sharply increased the turbidity of water reaching the Bumzoo water treatment plant, forcing authorities to suspend treatment operations.
Water supply to Anantnag town, Uranhal, Batengoo, Khandipora, T B Shah, Donipawa, Mattan, and nearby areas will remain affected until further notice, the department said, urging residents to use available water sparingly.
Officials said supply would resume once the turbidity of the Lidder stream returned to levels suitable for treatment.
The incidents come as Kashmir has witnessed spells of intense rainfall in recent days, triggering flash floods and damaging infrastructure in several parts of the Valley. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as intermittent rain is forecast over the coming days.
Meanwhile, a cloudburst was also reported from the Kellar area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
However, there were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property.
