Srinagar, Oct 26: Grand Mufti J&K, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, has expressed serious concern over figures reported by The Tribune, based on information obtained through an RTI, indicating that 16,397 women and girls were reported missing in Jammu & Kashmir during the stated period, with 4,271 cases reportedly remaining untraced.
As per a statement, he urged the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, to take immediate cognisance and call for a review of the reported figures from the concerned authorities, followed by appropriate, time-bound action to verify the status of unresolved cases and strengthen investigative efforts in accordance with law.
“Given the seriousness of the matter, the administration is urged to ensure effective coordination among the concerned agencies, regular monitoring of pending cases, and appropriate assistance to affected families, while safeguarding the privacy and dignity of those concerned,” the statement read.
The figures warrant serious public attention, without speculation or prejudgment of individual cases. Citizens and civil society must cooperate responsibly by sharing credible information with the authorities and refraining from circulating unverified claims.
The statement added, the safety and dignity of women and girls demand collective vigilance, institutional accountability and sustained action. Every reported missing-person case deserves due attention, and every affected family deserves a lawful, sensitive and timely response.
