Sopore, Sep 23: Sopore and adjoining areas of north Kashmir received heavy rain accompanied by hail on Wednesday evening, triggering a sudden change in weather and a sharp dip in temperatures.
The spell began in the evening as dark clouds gathered over the area, followed by intense rainfall and hail. Residents rushed indoors as the weather deteriorated, while outdoor activities were disrupted.
The hailstorm has caused concern among farmers and fruit growers as apple harvesting and rice cutting are currently underway in several parts of north Kashmir.
Hail at this stage of the season can damage apples on trees as well as harvested produce, although the extent of any crop damage in Sopore and surrounding areas was not immediately known.
There was no immediate official assessment of damage to orchards, crops or property.
The spell also brought cooler conditions to the area after relatively warmer autumn weather in recent days.
