Srinagar, Sep 29: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Municipal Act Amendment Bill by voice vote amid a heated debate between the treasury and opposition benches.
Replying to BJP MLA R S Pathania, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Pathania was “playing the role of a lawyer” who speaks for a client regardless of whether he believes in the argument.
“He must have been directed by his party to speak against the Bill,” Omar said.
On municipal elections, the Chief Minister said the government was ready to hold the polls and would follow the same approach as the Centre on restoration of statehood.
“Now they will ask the timeframe. We will use the same words and say as early as possible and as soon as possible,” he said.
The House subsequently passed the Bill through a voice vote.
