Baramulla, Oct 13: Residents of Khanpora in Baramulla have raised concerns over the safety of their homes, claiming that construction work on the under-construction bypass road is threatening the stability of nearby residential structures.
According to residents, several houses situated just a few yards below the bypass stretch are at risk of damage due to the ongoing construction activity.
They fear that continued construction could further weaken the foundations of their houses and increase the risk of landslides in the area.
The residents said uncertainty over the safety of their homes had left them anxious, with many struggling to sleep amid fears that their houses could sustain further damage.
“Some houses have already developed minor cracks, and the area has become vulnerable to landslides. We are living under constant fear that our residential houses could be damaged,” said Dilshada, a local woman.
The affected families have appealed to the authorities to relocate them to a safer place, saying any major damage to their houses would leave them financially devastated.
The residents said they had shifted from densely populated areas of Khanpora and invested lakhs of rupees in constructing their houses, with several families borrowing money from banks to build their homes.
They said the ongoing bypass construction had turned their houses into a source of constant anxiety rather than a place of security.
“Only a few residential houses are located just a few yards below the under-construction bypass road. The ongoing heavy work has shaken the foundations of our houses, and we fear they could suffer extensive damage,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a resident.
Ashraf said the affected families had submitted several representations to the Baramulla district administration, seeking intervention to address their concerns and ensure the safety of their homes.
However, he alleged that their grievances had not been addressed so far.
The residents have urged the district administration and the authorities concerned to assess the condition of the affected houses, take immediate preventive measures and explore relocation options to avert any potential tragedy.
