In a seminar on environmental protection organised by Private Schools Association, Kashmir and Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization ( NLCO) on July 6 at the Institution of Engineers, Sonawar, former IAS officer and Chairman Group of Concerned Citizens, J&K, Khurshid Ganai recommended mandatory composting of kitchen and biodegradable waste by those households who have atleast one kanal of land under and appurtenant to the house.
Khurshid Ganai said that in order to enforce the solid waste management rules, 2023, it is important to disseminate the rules through the media and direct interaction with the stakeholders.
Ganai said that this new rule about household composting must be first incorporated and then implemented by the municipal bodies of all cities and towns in J&K.
And that heavy fines must be prescribed and imposed on the violators and municipalities must refuse to lift the kitchen waste from the households unless the land area under and appurtenant to the house is less than one kanal.
