Jammu, Aug 17: Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Sunil Sharma on Monday hit out at the National Conference-government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing it of crossing all limits of corruption.
He alleged that the UT government was obstructing the conduct of elections to Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in J&K, leading to lapse of crores and crores of funds.
“The elected government, which has been in power in J&K for the past two years, is responsible for injustice with every section of the society, particularly the unemployed youth of J&K and daily wagers. This government has crossed all limits of corruption. A poor common citizen is being burdened with its corrupt practices. In the name of outsourcing, it has exploited unemployed youth and destroyed their dreams. Injustice has been disseminated to outstanding sportspersons,” LOP maintained, while responding to media queries on the sidelines of J&K BJP’s protest rally.
He asserted that to protest against such acts of the elected government, its absolute failure, Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised an “Aakrosh rally” in Jammu on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Responding to a question related to the allegation of NC-Congress government that it was not being allowed to work by wilfully delaying restoration of statehood, Sunil Sharma cautioned, “The people would not pardon it if NC-Congress government continued to use excuse of statehood to maltreat Jammu and Kashmir and ignore all these burning issues.”
Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took out a protest rally in the winter capital that witnessed the participation of thousands of enthusiastic party workers, public representatives and citizens from different walks of life. The party leaders slammed the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government for, what they alleged, “betraying the mandate of the people and pushing Jammu and Kashmir into a phase of administrative paralysis.” They asked the Chief Minister to deliver or quit.
The protest began simultaneously from three major locations – Dogra Chowk near Press Club, Maheshpura Chowk, Bakshi Nagar and near Radio Station, Panjtirthi. BJP activists raised slogans against the NC government, burnt its effigies at all three locations and marched towards Indira Chowk. The protestors later proceeded towards the Civil Secretariat, where they were stopped by the police.
Addressing the gathering, senior BJP leaders issued a stern warning to the NC government to end its politics of excuses and start fulfilling its commitments to the people. The protest concluded peacefully after the addresses.
Protest was led by J&K BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma, along with Leader of Opposition in J&K Assembly Sunil Sharma, MP Lok Sabha Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP Rajya Sabha Ghulam Ali Khatana, former Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, MLAs Dr Narinder Singh, Chander Prakash Ganga, Surjit Singh Salathia, Sham Lal Sharma, Vikram Randhawa, Arvind Gupta, Yudhvir Sethi, Shakti Raj Parihar, Prof Gharu Ram Bhagat, R S Pathania, Randhir Singh, Mohan Lal Bhagat, Dr Sunil Bhardwaj, Rajiv Bhagat, Shagun Parihar, Devyani Rana and other elected representatives and former elected representatives, who also addressed the gatherings at different places.
Sat Sharma, addressing on the occasion, said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir voted with hope, but the NC government responded with deception, inefficiency and blame politics. He said the government failed to fulfil even its own election promises and instead devoted its energy to making excuses while governance collapsed. He asserted that roads, power supply, drinking water, employment, development works and public services all suffered due to the government’s complete lack of seriousness. He said the BJP would continue to become the voice of every neglected citizen and would intensify its democratic agitation until the government started delivering justice and development.
Sunil Sharma said the National Conference government had become synonymous with broken promises and administrative failure. He said that instead of solving people’s problems, the government was busy creating political narratives to hide its own incompetence. He said every section of society, including youth, sports persons, farmers, employees, traders and common citizens were feeling betrayed because none of the major commitments made before the elections were honoured. He warned that if the government continued to ignore public sentiment, it would face an even stronger democratic movement across Jammu and Kashmir.
Jugal Kishore Sharma asserted that BJP would continue to expose every failure of the present dispensation and would stand shoulder to shoulder with the people in their struggle for justice, development and equal opportunities.
Ghulam Ali Khatana said governance could not run on speeches and blame games and urged the Omar Abdullah government to stop misleading the public and start working sincerely for development and good governance.
Dr Nirmal Singh said the NC government disappointed every region and every section of society by failing to provide effective governance.
J&K BJP vice-president Bharat Bhushan, Priya Sethi, Rekha Mahajan, Rajiv Charak, Rashpaul Verma, general secretary (organisation) Ashok Koul, general secretaries Sanjita Dogra, Baldev Singh Billawaria and Gopal Mahajan, Reema Padha, Arun Sharma, Sunil Sethi, Parbhat Singh Jamwal, Dr Pardeep Mahotra, Dr Makson Tickoo, Ved Sharma, Arun Parbhat, Brahmjyot Satti, Ranjodh Singh Nalwa, Dharminder Kumar, Neha Mahajan, Rakesh Pant and other senior leaders of the party were present.
