Srinagar, Sep 29: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed an uproar on Tuesday as Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma again sought the removal of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather over the statehood resolution.
Sharma accused the Speaker of allowing an “illegal and unconstitutional” resolution, citing objections over references to the 2000 autonomy resolution. The BJP has said it supports restoration of statehood but opposes references to autonomy.
Amid the ruckus, Rather asserted his authority, telling BJP members, “I know my role and duty.” He added, “You raised questions on my credibility, that is okay. But don’t try to teach me.”
As the disruption continued, the Speaker said, “Question doesn’t arise. I will not allow hooliganism.”
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary defended the resolution, saying, “This House is supreme. And this House represents the aspirations of people.” He said unemployment remained a major challenge in J&K and urged opposition members to allow the House to function peacefully.
Choudhary also questioned Sharma over the functioning of Rehbar-e-Khel employees during his tenure as sports minister.
The BJP has maintained that while it supports statehood, it objects to linking the demand with the 2000 autonomy resolution.
