Ramban, Jul 19: Following incessant rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban districts, authorities on Sunday opened all spillway gates of the Salal Hydroelectric Project dam to safely release the excess water accumulated in the reservoir.
The decision was taken after a significant rise in inflows into the Chenab River system due to continuous monsoon rains across the Chenab Valley. The controlled release of water is aimed at maintaining the reservoir within safe operating limits and ensuring the structural safety of the dam.
The opening of the spillway gates of dam has led to a sharp increase in the discharge of water downstream. District administrations and project authorities have issued strict public safety advisories, urging residents living along the banks of the Chenab River, particularly those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain on high alert and avoid venturing near the river.
Officials advised people not to attempt crossing the river or nearby streams, refrain from fishing, bathing or any other activity in or around the river, and keep livestock away from vulnerable areas.
Emergency response teams and local authorities are closely monitoring the river’s water level and the overall situation.
Earlier, authorities had also opened the gates of the DulHasti and Baglihar Hydroelectric Projects as part of scheduled reservoir desilting operations.
Prior advisories had been issued by the district administrations, warning the public about the expected rise in the Chenab’s water level during these operations.
With heavy rainfall continuing across several parts of the Chenab region, officials have appealed to the public to strictly follow all safety instructions and avoid spreading rumours or panic.
People have been urged to rely only on official updates issued by the district administrations, disaster management authorities and project management agencies.
Authorities said the situation was being continuously reviewed, and further decisions regarding dam operations will be taken depending on rainfall intensity and inflow into the reservoirs.
