An 18-year-old youth from Srinagar is feared to have drowned in Nallah Sindh while taking a bath near the Dumping Park at Kijpara in the Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Friday.

The youth was identified as Danish Ahmad, a resident of Hafiz Bagh, Srinagar, according to local reports. He had reportedly gone to Nallah Sindh to take a bath when he slipped into the water and was swept away by the strong current.

Soon after the incident, police personnel from Kangan, along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, local residents and other rescue personnel, reached the spot and launched a search operation.

Officials said the search was underway, with rescue teams scouring the waterway and adjoining stretches to trace the missing youth. There was no official confirmation regarding his recovery or death at the time of filing this report.

The incident comes amid a series of recent drowning incidents reported from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the risks associated with entering rivers, streams and other water bodies, particularly during the summer months.

Nallah Sindh has witnessed drowning incidents in the past. Earlier this year, the Kangan administration had issued an advisory urging people to refrain from bathing or venturing into Nallah Sindh, Wangath Nallah, the PDC Canal and other vulnerable water bodies in the subdivision.

The administration had cited inadequate safety infrastructure and rescue mechanisms at several locations and directed concerned officials to maintain surveillance around vulnerable spots.
