Srinagar, Aug 20: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor landed in Leh on Thursday after adverse weather conditions delayed his onward flight from Srinagar, officials and sources said.
Gor arrived in Leh on a flight directly from Srinagar after remaining at Srinagar Airport for some time as weather conditions delayed the scheduled flight.
Upon his arrival in Leh, the US envoy was escorted by a large security convoy as he proceeded from the airport.
Gor is on his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as part of his ongoing engagements in the region. His visit to Leh is part of his scheduled programme, sources said.
The ambassador had earlier remained at Srinagar Airport as adverse weather conditions affected flight operations and delayed his onward journey to Leh.
Gor’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between India and the United States. During his stay in Srinagar, he met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and held discussions on a range of issues.
The US envoy had described his meeting with Omar as “very good” and said follow-up discussions would be held in New Delhi and Washington.
Gor had also said Washington was hopeful of strengthening its engagement with Jammu and Kashmir, while describing the Union Territory as an important part of India and praising its natural beauty.
His arrival in Leh marks the next leg of his visit to the region.
