Kupwara, Aug 3: A 50-year-old woman lost her life after a cloudburst accompanied by a severe hailstorm caused flash floods in Hamli Warnow area of Lolab Valley, causing widespread damage to residential houses, orchards, and standing crops.
An official said that the cloudburst occurred on Monday late afternoon, resulting in a sudden surge of floodwaters that inundated several parts of the village.
“Lone Mohalla and Qureshi Mohalla were among the worst-hit localities, where multiple houses sustained damage while fruit orchards and agricultural fields suffered extensive losses,” he said.
The deceased was identified as Naseema Begum, 50, wife of Muhammad Ayoub Pathan of Hamli Warnow.
She was reportedly swept away by the floodwaters, triggering an extensive search operation.
Local volunteers, Police, and Army personnel launched a joint rescue operation immediately after the incident.
After several hours of searching, her body was recovered from Malik Mohalla in the Shahabad area.
The body was later shifted for medico-legal formalities before being handed over to the family for the last rites.
Meanwhile, district administration started assessing the damage caused by the cloudburst and hailstorm.
Teams have been deputed to the affected areas to evaluate losses to houses, orchards, and crops while restoration and relief measures are underway.
Locals appealed to the administration to provide immediate compensation to affected families and restore damaged infrastructure at the earliest.
