New Delhi, Mar 16: The government said India currently has more than adequate fertiliser stocks, and there is no cause for concern regarding supplies for the upcoming Kharif cropping season. Responding to queries, the official spokesperson said the Department of Fertilisers had already issued a detailed note recently outlining the country’s fertiliser availability situation and the steps taken to ensure adequate supplies.
Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson, said that fertiliser stocks are significantly higher than last year across key categories. “India has more than adequate stocks of fertilisers at this point of time, especially for Kharif 2026.
Our stocks of urea are more than what they were at this point last year, while DAP stocks are double of what they were last year. Our NPK stock position is also much higher compared to last year,” the spokesperson said. On domestic production, the spokesperson noted that the country’s urea output is currently expected to exceed nominal consumption levels, particularly as the ongoing Rabi season is nearing completion.
To further strengthen supply, authorities had also advanced the scheduled annual maintenance of several fertiliser plants. This step, the spokesperson said, would allow facilities to maximise production with the available gas during the coming months. The government has also taken steps to secure additional supplies from global markets. According to the spokesperson, the Department of Fertilizers had issued international tenders well in advance in anticipation of possible supply disruptions.
“These tenders have received a very good response and we expect to receive the bulk of the quantities ordered from a variety of sources by the end of March,” the spokesperson said. In addition, the department has decided to procure spot gas on a competitive basis to support fertiliser production, with the first phase of purchases expected to take place by Tuesday.
The spokesperson said India’s international partners have assured uninterrupted fertiliser supplies. “All our partners have assured us of continued supplies and we hope to attain and maintain comfortable stocks by the time Kharif demand peaks around mid-May,” the spokesperson said. Officials said the government continues to closely track both global and domestic developments in the fertiliser market and is taking necessary steps to ensure adequate availability for farmers. The spokesperson also urged observers and commentators to rely on factual information and avoid speculation that could create unnecessary panic about fertiliser availability.
