New Delhi, Jun 19: Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have agreed to a ceasefire that came into effect at 4 pm local time on Friday, a senior US official confirmed.
The ceasefire follows intense fighting that left at least 18 people dead in southern Lebanon in overnight Israeli air strikes, while four Israeli soldiers were also killed.
Earlier, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it had struck 80 Hezbollah-linked targets and killed dozens of fighters.
Lebanon’s health ministry says at least 3912 people have been killed and 11,699 injured since the latest conflict began, while around one million people remain displaced. Confirming the truce, IDF spokesperson Brig Gen Effie Defrin said the military was observing the ceasefire but remained prepared to resume operations if necessary.
The ceasefire forms part of the broader US-Iran agreement, which calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and reaffirms Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
