A three-day workshop on modern silkworm rearing techniques began at Achabal in Anantnag district on Tuesday to train silkworm rearers and field staff in scientific practices aimed at improving cocoon production and quality.
The workshop was inaugurated by Director Sericulture J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and Silk Samagra-2.
Addressing the participants, Bhat said the training programme has been organised to equip silkworm rearers, field functionaries and technical staff with modern rearing practices to enhance productivity and strengthen the sericulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said experts from the department and the Central Silk Board are conducting technical sessions on improved silkworm rearing, disease management, maintenance of optimum rearing conditions, use of upgraded equipment and scientific methods to improve cocoon yield. Participants are also being informed about the assistance available under HADP and Silk Samagra for the promotion of sericulture in the Union Territory.
Bhat stressed the need to integrate modern scientific practices with traditional sericulture methods to ensure sustainable growth of the sector and improve farmers’ livelihoods. He said the workshop includes practical training, live demonstrations and interactive sessions to help participants adopt improved production techniques.
Later, the Director visited Akad Ashmuqam in Anantnag, where a site is being considered for establishing a silk reeling unit. He said the department would submit the proposal to the government for consideration and extend the required support for the project.
