One of India’s leading integrated poultry companies, IB Group, has unveiled a long-term plan to help Jammu and Kashmir achieve self-reliance in poultry production by strengthening local farming through modern technology, quality inputs, organised broiler integration and continuous technical support for farmers.
Speaking after the Srinagar Poultry Conclave, held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on August 3, IB Group Managing Director Bahadur Ali said Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as a major market for chicken and other non-vegetarian food, but local production continues to lag behind demand.
He said nearly 60 to 70 per cent of the region’s chicken requirement is currently met through supplies from other states.
“J&K has very high chicken consumption, but local production is still limited. Our vision is to build a strong poultry ecosystem so that the region gradually becomes self-reliant, farmers earn more and local youth get new employment opportunities,” Ali said.
He attributed the dependence on outside supplies to the limited availability of quality day-old chicks, scientifically formulated feed, modern farm technology and reliable technical guidance. According to him, poultry farming in many parts of the region continues to be traditional and unorganised, affecting productivity, bird performance and farmers’ profitability.
Ali said IB Group’s integrated business model positions it to bridge these gaps. The company operates feed plants, hatcheries, a technical service network and an integrated production system across the country.
Under its organised broiler integration model, the company provides farmers with quality chicks, balanced feed, veterinary and technical support, scientific farm management practices and assured market linkages.
“When farmers receive quality chicks, consistent feed and scientific guidance, production improves and farming becomes more profitable. IB Group’s experience, infrastructure and integrated model can play an important role in increasing poultry production in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Ali said higher local production would not only reduce dependence on imports from other states but also improve farmers’ incomes, create employment opportunities for local youth and strengthen the rural economy.
He said the company also plans to work with leading banks to facilitate access to finance for eligible farmers to establish modern poultry infrastructure.
Ali added that IB Group looks forward to working with the Jammu and Kashmir administration and other stakeholders to develop progressive, farmer-centric policies that encourage scientific poultry farming, improve productivity and ensure long-term profitability.
The Srinagar Poultry Conclave was attended by around 200 to 300 poultry farmers from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The day-long programme featured technical sessions on scientific broiler farming, modern production practices, farm management and strategies to improve farm profitability. Farmers who demonstrated outstanding performance were also felicitated during the event.
Concluding his address, Ali said the company’s objective is to transform Jammu and Kashmir from being merely a large poultry-consuming market into a modern, organised and self-reliant poultry-producing region through collaboration with farmers, financial institutions and the government.
