Alleging that successive dispensations have taken the people for a ride, locals from the Bumhama area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district have demanded the upgrade of the Girls Middle School to a High School.
Established in 1964, the school caters to a large population, but for unknown reasons, it has not been upgraded despite repeated pleas by locals.
The residents of the village told Greater Kashmir that over a dozen primary schools feed into this school, but no one has shown interest in upgrading the decades-old institution.
The residents said their children, after passing Class 8, are forced to either enroll at Drugmulla or Kupwara, which, according to them, is proving difficult for them.
“The girl students face the most brunt as they have to travel several kilometres either to reach Kupwara or Drugmulla. If the school had been upgraded, they could easily study in their native village,” said a local.
“I fail to understand why this school has not been upgraded despite being among the oldest schools in the whole Kupwara district,” he added.
The locals have appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to look into the matter and get the school upgraded for the benefit of students.
