Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Balbir Singh on Sunday paid glowing tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, marking the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas with solemn ceremonies across Kashmir.
The Chinar Corps Commander laid a wreath at the Chinar War Memorial and paid homage to the Bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the nation.
“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, Chinar Corps Commander laid wreath at the Chinar War Memorial and paid homage to the Bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice for the Nation. Chinar Corps salutes the indomitable spirit of our Bravehearts on the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas.” Chinar Corps said in a post on X.
The wreath-laying ceremony was attended by senior Army officers and personnel, who observed a moment of silence in memory of the fallen soldiers. Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorate India’s victory in the Kargil War of 1999, when the Indian Armed Forces successfully evicted Pakistani troops and Pakistan-backed intruders who had occupied strategic heights along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector of Ladakh.
The conflict began after infiltrators crossed the LoC during the winter months and occupied several mountain peaks overlooking National Highway-1A, the vital road linking Srinagar with Leh. The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay, supported by the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar, to recapture the occupied positions.
Fought under some of the world’s most challenging high-altitude conditions, with soldiers battling at elevations exceeding 16,000 feet, the conflict lasted nearly three months. On July 26, 1999, India declared the successful completion of military operations after all major infiltrated positions had been recaptured.
The war claimed the lives of more than 500 Indian soldiers, whose courage and sacrifice remain a defining chapter in the nation’s military history. Among the most celebrated heroes of the conflict were Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, who were awarded the Param Vir Chakra for displaying exceptional gallantry.
Every year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed across the country with commemorative events, particularly at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, where families of the fallen, veterans, serving personnel and senior government officials gather to honour the martyrs and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
