Srinagar, Oct 15: Jammu and Kashmir Police Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat on Thursday expressed confidence that sustained efforts to engage youth through sports and other constructive activities would help neutralise the “evil intent of a western neighbour”, criminal networks and narco-terror networks.

Addressing a gathering at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, Prabhat underscored the importance of channelising the energy of young people through sports, describing it as a key component of the police’s civic action programmes and its efforts to counter drug abuse and narco-terrorism.

“The evil intent of a western neighbour, the criminal networks, the narco-terror networks, all those would have been adequately neutralised,” he said, expressing hope that sustained engagement with youth would contribute to tackling these threats.

The DGP said sports remained central to the police’s outreach initiatives, adding that the department would organise 240 district-level sporting events this year, compared with 144 events conducted last year.

He said more than 6,000 people participated in the recently held Run for Unity, reflecting the growing reach of sporting activities and community engagement initiatives.

“Sports and policing both demand utmost discipline, coordination, a humongous amount of teamwork, ability to perform under pressure, courage to face uncertainty and, most importantly, to fight for your goals and perform beyond your physical and mental boundaries,” Prabhat said.

Emphasising the need for sustained efforts to tackle drug abuse, he said the government-backed Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan could achieve its objectives through continued engagement with young people and coordinated action against criminal and narco-terror networks.

He said channelising youth energy towards constructive pursuits was among the most important factors determining the quality of life and prosperity of a society.

Referring to historical civilisations, including imperial Rome, ancient Egypt and Sparta, as well as India’s Gupta and Maurya dynasties, Prabhat said sports had historically played an important role in engaging young people and promoting social cohesion.

The DGP also said 1,789 children were sent for Bharat Darshan last year, while the target for the current year had been set at 2,000, according to Kashmir News Service.

He highlighted the achievements of the J&K Police Central Sports Team, which is part of the J&K Armed Police, saying its athletes continued to win medals and bring recognition to the Union Territory at national and international sporting events.

Crediting police officers and personnel for organising sporting activities, Prabhat assured participants that the department would continue to expand its sports promotion initiatives.

“To our distinguished guests, including the civilians and the sports persons who are here today, let me assure you J&K Police will continue with its endeavour in terms of promoting sports more and more,” he said.

Present during the function were DGP Home Guards /SDRF Abdul Gani Mir, Spl DG Coordination SJM Gillani, ADGP CID M K Sinha, ADGP Armed Nitish Kumar, IGP Kashmir Sujit Kumar and other senior officers.
