The Basic Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider Course was organised by Shehjar Multispecialty Hospital in collaboration with Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag under the Indian Academy of Paediatrics’ (IAP) First Golden Minute Project.

Prof. Showkat Hussain Tali, head of the Department of Paediatrics at GMC Anantnag, served as instructor and course coordinator. He is a national trainer for basic and advanced NRP and the state academic coordinator for the programme in Jammu and Kashmir.

The course included hands-on sessions, simulated emergency scenarios and assessments in accordance with the latest IAP-National Neonatology Forum guidelines.

“Such programmes are crucial for reducing neonatal mortality and strengthening newborn care services in south Kashmir,” said Dr. Fozia Jan, senior consultant gynaecologist and co-organiser of the programme.

India’s neonatal mortality rate stood at 19 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to the Sample Registration System Statistical Report 2023. United Nations estimates put it at 17 per 1,000 in 2024. More than 70 percent of infant deaths in the country occur during the first 28 days of life.

Figures shared by the organisers put Jammu and Kashmir’s neonatal mortality rate at 9.8 deaths per 1,000 live births. The Union Territory’s under-5 and infant mortality rates stand at 15 and 14, respectively.

Dr. G.M. Naikoo, senior consultant and associate professor of minimal access surgery at GMC Srinagar, appreciated GMC Anantnag for its academic collaboration in organising the programme.

Shehjar Multispecialty Hospital said it was the first and only hospital in Anantnag to receive accreditation under the third edition of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers standards.
