The University of Kashmir (KU) witnessed a vibrant culmination of its Women’s Inter-Department Cricket, Women’s Inter-Department Badminton and Men’s Inter-Department Badminton Tournaments with a glittering prize distribution ceremony held at the University’s Ground “A”.
The three sporting events, as per a KU statement, emerged as prominent highlights of the University’s Annual Sports Calendar 2026, witnessing record participation, thrilling competition and great performances by students from various teaching departments and satellite campuses.
The Women’s Inter-Department Cricket Tournament was a major highlight, with 12 teams competing for the title. The final was played between the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Studies and the Department of Physical Education & Sports (M.P.Ed.).
Batting first, the Department of Tourism posted a sublime total of 80 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the stipulated 15 overs. Displaying an impressive batting performance, the M.P.Ed. team chased down the target in just 10 overs, securing a convincing six-wicket victory and lifting the Inter-Department trophy.
The Women’s Inter-Department Badminton Tournament also witnessed overwhelming participation, with 12 teams and nearly 60 women students taking part. The final witnessed an exciting competition between the Institute of Technology, Zakura and the Department of Education. Exhibiting a remarkable composure and skill, the Institute of Technology, Zakura, defeated the Department of Education 2–0 in straight sets to emerge as champions.
The Men’s Inter-Department Badminton Tournament recorded equally impressive participation, with 14 teams and more than 70 students competing for honours. The final was played between the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Physical Education & Sports. In a nail biting final, the Department of Physical Education & Sports emerged victorious, defeating the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences by 3–2 to clinch the championship.
Director, Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, Prof. Raies A Qadri graced the concluding ceremony and congratulated the participating teams and winners for their sporting spirit.
Prof. Qadri emphasised that sports play a vital role in developing discipline, leadership, teamwork and resilience among students.
He appreciated the growing participation of students, particularly women, in the University’s sporting activities and underscored the Directorate’s commitment to creating greater opportunities for competitive sports at the University.
The concluding ceremony was held at Ground “A”, wherein medals, trophies and certificates were distributed among winner and runner-up teams by Prof. Raies.
The tournaments were coordinated by Assistant Director Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Dar, while the proceedings were conducted by Assistant Director Tausif Bhat and Football Coach Sajid Yousuf.
