Srinagar, Oct 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Sunday said that the Haryana Police had registered an FIR and rounded up two accused in connection with an attack on a Kashmir-bound passenger bus in Karnal late Saturday night. The bus was allegedly targeted with stones and bricks, smashing its windows and leaving an elderly Kashmiri passenger injured.
The Association, in a statement issued, said the bus, operated by Star World Ventures, was travelling from Delhi towards Srinagar and had stopped near Divine Star Dhaba in Karnal at around 10:30 PM on October 17 when the incident took place. Around 40 passengers were reportedly aboard the vehicle.
JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami said the Association had immediately taken up the matter with the Haryana Chief Minister’s Office and the Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, seeking urgent intervention, strict action against the perpetrators, and justice for the injured passenger.
Following the incident, Khuehami spoke to Rajeev Jaiteley, Media Adviser to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and DGP Haryana Ajay Singhal, urging the state authorities to ensure accountability and strengthen measures to protect Kashmiri passengers travelling through the state.
The DGP, Haryana, informed Khuehami that an FIR had been registered and the accused had been arrested by the Karnal Police. Meanwhile, Jaiteley conveyed that the state government had taken serious note of the incident and directed the IGP Karnal Range andSSP Karnal to initiate strict action against those responsible.
Jaiteley said that, two men, identified as Mohit and Sawan, both residents of Karnal, have been rounded up for questioning in connection with the alleged stone-pelting. The vehicle allegedly used in the incident has also been taken into police custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
Jaiteley assured the JKSA National Convenor that the Haryana government would not tolerate communal intimidation or violence against Kashmiri people and that strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in such acts.
JKSA welcomed the police action and the state government’s intervention, while urging the Haryana Chief Minister to ensure a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation. The Association stressed that all those involved must be held accountable in accordance with the law and that the injured passenger must receive justice.
Khuehami said that attacks on passengers because of their Kashmiri identity, if motivated by prejudice, strike at the fundamental principles of equality, fraternity, and constitutional citizenship.
