Anantnag, Aug 29:A 35-year-old man from Qaimoh in Kulgam died at a private hospital here following kidney stone surgery, triggering protests by his family and relatives, who alleged medical negligence.
Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, son of Ghulam Nabi Wani, was admitted to a private hospital in Anantnag town, for the procedure.
Family members alleged lapses in his treatment and demanded an impartial inquiry.
“Our family member was admitted for a kidney stone operation. We were told that his condition was stable, but later it deteriorated and he died. We want a fair investigation into the matter,” a relative said.
“If negligence is established, those responsible should be held accountable and strict action should be taken,” another family member said.
The protest turned tense, with some relatives allegedly creating a ruckus and damaging hospital property.
Police reached the spot and initiated an inquiry to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death. The body was taken for medico-legal examination and later handed over to the family.
Hospital spokesperson said Wani had undergone percutaneous nephrolithotomy, or PCNL, for removal of kidney stones.
“The patient was fine yesterday evening and oral medicines were also started,” he said.
The spokesperson said Wani went for a walk in the ward in the morning and suddenly collapsed.
“It could possibly be an embolism or a myocardial infarction (MI),” he said, adding that the autopsy report was awaited.
“Otherwise, the patient was stable and completely fine,” he said.
