Open manholes and pothole-ridden roads along the Bikram Chowk-Jammu University stretch have raised safety concerns among pedestrians and motorists, particularly students and elderly commuters who frequently use the busy 700-800 metre route.
Adding to the problem, people travelling from the area said that fallen electric poles and other debris can be seen lying along parts of the route. Such hazards have also reportedly resulted in injuries to pedestrians.
“The condition of the road is concerning, dozens of potholes are visible at several points. Many of these potholes have remained unattended during the construction and drainage-related works,” said a local resident.
Since several potholes are difficult to spot, motorists often drive into them unexpectedly, causing damage to vehicles and discomfort to passengers.
Two-wheeler riders are particularly at risk, with sudden encounters with potholes increasing the chances of skidding and accidents.
Following recent rains, several portions of the footpath have also become waterlogged, making pedestrian movement even more difficult.
Residents and commuters have urged the concerned authorities to urgently repair the footpaths, cover open manholes, remove fallen electric poles and debris, and fill the potholes to ensure safe and hassle-free movement along this important route.
