US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Leh on Thursday as part of his maiden official tour to the high-altitude frontier region.

Perched atop a hill roughly 19 km from Leh, the 15th-century Gelug monastery celebrated for its striking architectural resemblance to Tibet’s Potala Palace, serves as the largest monastic complex in central Ladakh.

During his visit, Ambassador Gor toured the ancient site, which houses historic stupas, rare scroll paintings (thangkas), and the renowned 48-foot tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha, installed in 1980.

The monastery visit forms the second leg of Ambassador Gor’s high-profile diplomacy across India’s northernmost frontier, following extensive engagements in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Gor is the first serving US envoy to visit Ladakh in recent years, making the trip an event of notable diplomatic interest.

Meanwhile, the US embassy in India in a post on X said that the Ambassador Gor wrapped up his visit to Srinagar and Ladakh .

“Ambassador Sergio Gor wrapped up a visit to Srinagar and Leh this week, highlighting the growing US-India partnership through meaningful dialogue and cultural engagement. In Srinagar, Ambassador Gor met Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and later visited Leh to experience Ladakh’s culture and traditions,” US embassy in India posted on X.
