Srinagar, Sept 28: BJP MLA R.S. Pathania on Monday moved a no-confidence motion against Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, triggering noisy scenes in the House.
The motion was moved amid protests by BJP legislators, who raised slogans of “Kursi chhodo, kursi chhodo, Speaker sahib kursi chhodo” in the Assembly.
Responding to the motion, Speaker Rather said it would be listed in the business of the House and processed in accordance with the rules and procedure.
Earlier, before the commencement of Question Hour, Pathania questioned the role of the House and the Speaker in moving resolutions and bills, apparently referring to various resolutions and legislative business taken up by the Assembly.
His remarks led to interruptions from ruling National Conference members. However, Rather directed them not to interrupt Pathania and allowed him to make his point.
“You sit down. Let him (Pathania) speak. He has a point,” Rather told the House.
While responding to Pathania’s concerns, however, the Speaker said the BJP legislator had not interpreted the relevant rules correctly.
“It is unfortunate that you didn’t read the rule properly,” Rather said.
“You are a practising lawyer. You should have read it properly,” he added.
The exchange came as the Assembly witnessed heightened political tensions ahead of the discussion on the resolution seeking restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
