Srinagar, Oct 9: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness predominantly dry weather until October 20, with brief spells of light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in some districts over the next few days, Director Meteorological Centre Srinagar Mukhtar Ahmad said on Friday.
Ahmad said a light spell of precipitation was expected around October 10, with a similar weather pattern likely on October 13 and 14 due to a weak Western Disturbance.
“An expected spell occurred around the 8th. Light snowfall was also observed during this period. In the coming days, there are chances of another light spell around the 10th in several districts,” Ahmad said.
“A similar weather pattern may persist, particularly around October 13 and 14. Due to a weak Western Disturbance, there are chances of light rain, thunderstorms and lightning in some districts, along with gusty winds,” he added.
However, Ahmad said no major spell of rain or snowfall was expected until October 20.
“Overall, the weather is likely to remain generally fine until October 20, with chances of a few light spells in between. There is no major spell expected until then,” he said.
Ahmad said no significant weather warning was warranted at present, although people should exercise caution during periods of thunderstorms and gusty winds.
“There is no weather activity at present that warrants a warning. However, there are chances of thunderstorms and gusty winds, particularly around the 10th and again between the 13th and 14th. People should take some precautions,” he said.
“There is no possibility of any major rainfall or snowfall in the higher reaches,” he added.
Farmers, travellers advised caution
Ahmad advised farmers to continue harvesting operations over the coming days and ensure that harvested crops and agricultural produce were stored safely.
“Farmers should continue harvesting in the coming days and try to store harvested crops or produce safely,” he said.
Travellers were advised to follow the advisories issued by the administration and the traffic department.
“Travellers should fully follow the advisories issued by the administration and the traffic department,” Ahmad said.
Temperatures to decline gradually
Daytime temperatures in the plains of Kashmir are currently hovering around 27–28 degrees Celsius, while temperatures in the higher-altitude areas are around 20–22 degrees Celsius. In the Jammu division, daytime temperatures are ranging between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius.
Ahmad said temperatures were expected to decline gradually as the season changed, although the ongoing dry spell was likely to slow the fall.
“Day temperatures are still around 27, 28 degrees Celsius in the plains, while in the hilly areas they are around 20 to 22 degrees. In the Jammu division, temperatures are approximately 28 to 30 degrees,” he said.
“In the coming days, temperatures will fall gradually. The season has already changed, so temperatures will decline little by little. However, because of the dry spell, the fall will be slow. The chances of a rapid decline are very low,” Ahmad added.
